What is VSF?

VIRTUAL SNOW FESTIVAL is a collaboration art project about making a snow sculpture. Participants are elementary school children, junior high school students, high school students, their teachers and all poeple who are interested in this project. VIRTUAL SNOW FESTIVAL has WWW galleries and a conference so that people can show and see images of snow sculpture they created or thought in their minds submitting their works. Therefore, people can share their ideas and have a discussion on the net interactively. Some people in the northan country are usually going to take part in this project to make a real snow sculpture because they have much snow and know how to create. Also other people not living with much snow in the winter and not knowing how to make one can participate in this project to show their ideas and have some discussions on the net.

Through the discussion, we will make a real one in Ohdori Park,Sapporo in the begining of February, the week of Sapporo Snow Festival.

What can you experience in this project?

You can experience a snow festival virtually on the net. You can imagin your own snow sculpture and may see a real one in the future. Even if you don't know how to make and what snow looks like, you are going to know them well to take part in this project.

 

How can you take part in this project?

You can create your images of a snow sculpture to paint a picture,to make a cray model, and 2D or 3D CG works at your school or home. After those works will be uploaded to BBS of Virtual Snow Festival, you can take part in a discussion group. You may participate in this discussion only to refer your opinion. After all, we can have a world wide discussion about a snow sculpture interactively.

 

Why do we make a snow sculpture?

SAPPORO snow festival started from 1949 at Odori Park in Sapporo. This festival became very famous not only for Japanese, but also people over the world. Therefore, there are many teams from oversea to make theirs. Showing a way to people living in countries and areas where they never have much snow, we are wondering people can share a joy of making a snow sculpture and understand our northan culture in Sapporo. Coincidently, we understand each other having a global discussion.

The goals, the mission of this project is to take part in making a collaborative snow sculpture and to have a global discussion through the Internet.

 

Who is the target for VSF?

General. All people who are interested in making a snow sculpture or concerned with education using a computer.

 

Our experience and background

We are menbers of Association of Computer and Education Hokkaido(ACE Hokkaido) which is a reserch group about using a computer for education since April 1994. Menbers are teachers, students, companies and individuals who are interested in education using computers.
We have done some projects below,

• 7 times routine conference in 1994.
• Started a www project called OROPPAS (http://www.oroppas.or.jp) in September 1994.
• Multi Media Battle in Sapporo 1995.
• Virtual Snow Festival 1995-2008
